This signature detects attempts to exploit a known flaw in Microsoft Windows. A crafted file name or directory with invalid characters could result in arbitrary code execution. This signature may also trigger on Samba share contents between non-Windows systems where such characters are valid. Therefore, this signature should only be used to protect Windows-based systems.
Microsoft Windows is prone to a remote command-injection that affects the Windows Shell component vulnerability because it fails to adequately sanitize user-supplied input data. Attackers can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary shell commands with user-level privileges. This may facilitate the remote compromise of affected computers.
