MS-RPC: Windows Messenger Overflow (1)

This signature detects attempts to exploit a known vulnerability against Windows Messenger Service. Windows 2000, XP, and 2003 are vulnerable; MSN Messenger is not affected. A flaw in the code for Windows Messenger Service (used for Win Pop-up) does not correctly account for the space used by a certain character. Attackers can send this character in large numbers to overflow the buffer, causing Windows to crash and possibly execute arbitrary code.

Extended Description

Microsoft Windows Messenger Service is prone to a remotely exploitable buffer overrun vulnerability. This is due to insufficient bounds checking of messages before they are passed to an internal buffer. Exploitation could result in a denial of service or in execution of malicious code in Local System context, potentially allowing for full system compromise.
