This signature detects attempts to exploit a known vulnerability in VideoLAN VLC Media Player. A successful attack can lead to a buffer overflow and arbitrary remote code execution within the context of the user.
VLC media player is prone to a buffer-overflow vulnerability because the WAV file decoder fails to perform adequate boundary checks on user-supplied input. Attackers may leverage this issue to execute arbitrary code in the context of the application. Failed attacks will cause denial-of-service conditions. VLC media player 0.8.6h is vulnerable; other versions may also be affected.
