This signature detects attempts to use unsafe ActiveX controls in Sygate Personal Firewall. An attacker can create a malicious Web site containing Web pages with dangerous ActiveX controls, which if accessed by a victim, allows the attacker to upload and download files from the victim's computer, potentially resulting in arbitrary program execution.
Sygate Personal Firewall ActiveX control is prone to a buffer-overflow vulnerability because the application fails to perform adequate boundary checks on user-supplied data. Successful exploits will allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code in the context of the vulnerable application, typically Internet Explorer, using the ActiveX control. Failed exploit attempts will likely result in denial-of-service conditions. Sygate Personal Firewall 5.6 build 2808 is vulnerable; other versions may also be affected.
