This signature detects attempts to use unsafe ActiveX controls in Sun Java Runtime Environment. An attacker can create a malicious Web site containing Web pages with dangerous ActiveX controls, which if accessed by a victim, allows the attacker to gain control of the victim's client browser.
Sun Java Runtime Environment is prone to multiple remote buffer-overflow vulnerabilities because the application fails to perform adequate boundary checks on user-supplied data. Successfully exploiting these issues allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code in the context of the application using the ActiveX control (typically Internet Explorer). Failed exploit attempts will likely result in denial-of-service conditions. Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 13 is vulnerable; other versions may also be affected. NOTE: These issues may be related to the vulnerabilities described in BID 35945 (Sun JRE/JDK Java Web Start ActiveX Control ATL Remote Code Execution Vulnerability).
